One Year (plus a week and a few days…)

It seems only fitting as I sit here in the Drawing Room of the Soho House I’m watching snowflakes swirl outside the large picture windows. Why, you ask? Because a year ago on this day I woke to a dusting of snow on the ground after marrying the best guy I know.

It seems appropriate I pick this post up now – after having just given Patrick his anniversary card yesterday (in true first anniversary form our gifts to each other were paper) – just under two weeks after our actual anniversary. Life has been insane. Over the last three weeks we have been in three different states – together in Utah for a ski trip that was not so much a vacation as a chance for both of us to be hit with and recover from a nasty stomach bug, me in Madison for a conference and a lovely March snowstorm, and Patrick in San Francisco for a conference (next year I’m tagging along). Then at the beginning of this week I was out in Aurora for a go-live. I don’t actually know how I used to travel 75% of the time for work. I have become a creature who really appreciates her routine and all of this back and forth has me feeling a little crazed. Perhaps if our vacation hadn’t been wrought with illness we would have felt more refreshed upon our return, but I’m ending this week glad I don’t have class this afternoon; rather, I have a few hours to catch up and breathe.

When I started this post I thought I would have a lot to say about this first year of marriage, but to be honest, it didn’t feel much different than the years prior we spent together. Now, however, I know I have a constant companion, someone who will always have my back (in this world of uncertainly this means more to me than I ever realized), will always see the best in me (and remind me of it until he’s blue in the face), and will always love me no matter what. I’d say that makes for a pretty awesome year.
